My poor tomato plants have caught blight. It’s the same as the dreaded potato blight and tomatoes grown outside are particularly susceptible to it. Anyway, all is not lost because I’ve salvaged lots of green tomatoes and am going to make green tomato chutney. There are many versions out there but this one is my mum’s which is super easy, really delicious and keeps for ages!

  • 1kg green tomatoes, roughly chopped
  • 500g onions, roughly chopped
  • 750g cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced
  • 120g sultanas or prunes
  • 750g granulated sugar
  • 300ml malt vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Put all the ingredients in a pan and slowly bring to the boil. Cook slowly on a low heat, stirring to prevent burning, until thick and jam-like. Taste and add salt if needed. Put in jam jars which have been heated at a low temperature and seal.

Voila! It’s as easy as that.
